Fluency Focus is a carefully sequenced, fully resourced programme of twenty one-hour whole class reading lessons to be delivered once a week in Year 5.

Designed to improve Year 5 pupils’ reading fluency and comprehension, the programme takes the place of an existing reading lesson each week. Each lesson includes a set of text-specific comprehension questions to consolidate the connection between fluency and comprehension.

Built on evidence-informed fluency strategies, the programme follows a clear structure in which the strategies are taught, modelled and then practised by the children. As they become more confident in using the strategies and their independence builds, the children take more responsibility for their reading and the teacher gradually steps away.

Each lesson is lively, active and enjoyable – the strategies lend themselves to reading aloud, reading together and reading foreach other. At the end of the programme, not only should children’s confidence and comprehension have improved, their enjoyment of reading should also be enhanced.
