Modelled fluent reading

Tell the children you’re about to a read an information text about the continents. Ask if the children know what a continent is. Can they name the continents?

Explain that a continent is one of the earth’s seven main divisions of land. Give the example of the UK being part of Europe.

Ask the discussion questions on the board.

Text marking/phrased reading

Show the children the section with the phrases already marked.

Shared text mark the next section.

Tell the children to mark the next section on their own.  Go through this together.

Echo reading

Echo read the section you phrase marked together, pausing where you feel it’s appropriate to enable the children to echo back fluently.  Provide feedback eg. emphasising particular words, pausing at punctuation.

Paired reading

Tell the children that the information in this text is quite complex and fascinating.  They are to imagine they are telling someone about it for the first time and must be very clear.

Remind children how to use the fluency scale.  This may require you to model how to use the scale, recapping, in particular, expression and smoothness.  Ask the children to read the text to each other.  Use the scale to evaluate each other’s performance and give feedback.  Circulate and provide coaching to individual pairs where necessary.

Comprehension

Have a discussion about the three questions.  Give children time to talk in pairs before answering them.  Feedback as a class.  If necessary, pause the class after each question is discussed and take ideas, asking children to use the sentence stems provided.
